NaNoWriMo: Day 13

NaNoWriMo Day 13

Well that was good timing! I won today (woohoo!) and then found out that I got a job. So right when I won’t have nearly as much time to write…I don’t need to. I still will try to write more, maybe hitting 75,000 instead of the 100,000 I had briefly considered. We shall see. It was a great feeling when I was able to type in a number over 50,000 into my word count, especially with this being my first year trying it. If I, as a newbie, could pull this off in 13 days then everyone else definitely can do it in 30! You got this! (insert other motivational phrases here)

Now that I have completed the 50,000 word goal I’m not sure if I really should do daily posts anymore. I’d ask for feedback but lately when I’ve tried that it hasn’t really worked (small following will do that to you not that I deserve a large one just because). So I think what I will go with is updates when I’ve actually written. With work now I won’t have nearly as much time to do all of my usual stuff as it is, let alone the extra daily posts, and you don’t need me babbling on a zero day anyway. 😛

**Sidenote I’m adding, I won’t be doing a Waiting On Wednesday this week. I have to go to work to start my training at 7:20am so ya, not happening. Hopefully you forgive me.

How is your NaNoWriMo going so far? Are you still having fun and enjoying writing? Have you been participating in any word wars, sprints, 1k1hrs or hangouts yet? Let me know in the comments if you’d like! Good luck! Thanks for being so supportive as well, I really appreciate it.

NaNoWriMo: Day 12

NaNoWriMo Day 12

I’m so close. o.o Like…tomorrow, it’s possible I could be done. So freaking psyched, anyway, before I get all rambletastic let me give a quick recap of my day 12. I wasn’t sure that I was going to write today at all but then I saw one of my favorite NaNoWordSprinters was hosting and I seized the opportunity. I wrote for about 1.8 hours and completed ~4,200 words. I thought that I might stop there for the day because I had passed 45,000 words total which was a great milestone. Then at about 9:50pm or so I felt the itch to write a bit more for two reasons. First, I wanted to pass 5,000 words on the day because it would be only the fourth time doing so and just because it is a nice number to do in a day. For those of you who don’t know I am on my second piece, the first is all but completed at 37,050 words. So the second piece was close to 10,000 words which is another barrier I wanted to push past. I somehow managed to do both in about 45 minutes or so.

Weeeeeee! I like how the second piece is flowing. I’m doing a back and forth between flashback and present day with my MC/MMC (main character/male main character) which is working very nicely so far. After a couple more chapters of that I will be introducing my MC2 or FMC (female main character) and then I can continue the bouncing back and forth that my novel is using but in this case it will be between POV (point of view) instead of the flashbacks. The plot is working itself rather nicely and this piece, unlike the first one, could be novel length instead of novella. I could easily see this getting to be 100,000+ words, though obviously it is HIGHLY unlikely that I will complete it in this NaNoWriMo with the time remaining. I can’t wait for tomorrow, it’s going to be awesome to win my first attempt at NaNoWriMo and so quickly! ^.^

NaNoWriMo: Day 11

NaNoWriMo Day 11

This was another day off for me. I know that may seem weird when I was so jazzed yesterday but I don’t feel that need to write every single day, and I won’t do it just to hit a word count on any given day. I really didn’t have writing on the mind at all until I was writing this post. I watched football, helped my mom with some work she needed to get done and read some more. It was relaxing and I didn’t feel guilty for ignoring NaNoWriMo whatsoever. Maybe I will write tomorrow, maybe not, but if I do it will be because that desire has been rekindled and not because I see others doing so. I write for me. ^.^

NaNoWriMo: Day 10

NaNoWriMo Day 10

Well today was certainly a turnaround in productivity! I saw that there were sprints going on Twitter and I decided that I would use them as a motivational tool to get me back in the groove, at least so that I could try and hit my word count for the day. I hadn’t done that since Day 6! Well needless to say I went way past the 1,667 words I needed for the day.

I found some more things I could work into my first piece by doing some research and so I added a couple thousand words to that. Then I started working on my second piece for the first time in what seemed like ages (though that was probably day 6 too). Let me tell you, I don’t know what got me going in such a good place but I started churning out words like it was nothing! I ended up getting that piece from where it had been stuck at 1,717 to 4,517 by the end of my writing sessions. I’m thrilled with where the story is going and how the pacing is so far, even the actual words are good, very little suck whatsoever and if you are doing or have done NaNoWriMo then you know they often have a very high level of suck. All in all I was very happy and getting all those words out felt awesome. ^.^

NaNoWriMo: Day 9

NaNoWriMo Day 9

So a quick recap of another day of zeroness. Get up earlier than I like (7:30AM) so I can get ready for my interview. Take tums to keep my stomach calm from my anxiety and Benadryl for my allergies/cold that I know will come. Walk 1.2 miles in 40 degree Fahrenheit weather to the place. Interview lasts all of fifteen minutes but goes relatively well, proceed to walk all the way back. Incur blister on left heel from shoes that aren’t meant for walking long distances.  Take Benadryl-induced three-hour nap. Watch a lot of YouTube videos. Call my grandma and talk for a while. Talk to my mom for a couple hours. Watch more YouTube videos. Get all of the pictures and links together and create my Stacking the Shelves post for the week. Write this.

I’ve come to peace with the fact that I won’t write every day anymore, I’m not really going to try to. I was writing just for the word count and I wasn’t enjoying it as much. I have a big cushion and I’m going to use it so that I can enjoy it when I do write. I’ll complete the 50,000 don’t worry. I hope all of you are having a great NaNoWriMo, keep writing whether you hit word counts or not and remember to have fun! Don’t get bogged down in the numbers, just try to write when you feel inspired or if you can’t get that inspiration naturally try talking with other NaNoWriMo peoples, it’ll help I swear! See you tomorrow where I may or may not have written anything. 😛

NaNoWriMo: Day 8

NaNoWriMo Day 8

Sadly another lackluster day, this time without even an excuse of outline building. I got about 500 words in but obviously that’s nowhere near my desired target. I’m going to have to keep this post short and sweet because I’m heading off to an interview. Sorry! Hopefully you’ll forgive me. Tomorrow you’ll get to see my book haul and Day 9 so yay? Maybe? o.o *hides*

NaNoWriMo: Day 7

NaNoWriMo Day 7

Today was not a failure. That is what I have to keep telling myself when I see that 0 for how much I wrote. There will be days like this and I not only have the cushion to easily withstand it, but I actually needed this particular one. I have pretty much finished my first piece as I mentioned yesterday and so I’m down to my new second one. The problem was that I hadn’t planned on doing a second piece so I was still making it up as I was going along. I wasn’t having a good day to begin with for reasons I won’t get into and I didn’t have enough direction for my second piece and I was feeling a disconnect from it. I didn’t feel any urge or desire to write it, I didn’t have a why.

Since I haven’t ever provided a visual of what my place looks like let me inform you that I have stacks of books surrounding me. My general place of being, as far as inside my house goes, is on my bed. It is obviously nice and comfy and big enough so that I have some work space too. Next to it is a dresser of which I primarily use the top of it and also some wire cage type shelving. My bed is also next to a window with a rather large sill so there is space there as well. That means that currently I have not one, not two, but three small stacks of books within reach, a fourth not much farther off and then on the other side of my room all of the rest in various shelving or lack there of. Almost all of the new books I get hang around near my bed in case I feel the desire/find the time to read one.

Now that you have that visual in place I can move on. So I was trying to find some inspiration for my second piece, or even possibly come up with a different idea and decided maybe just picking up some of these unread books and reading a small bit from each might inspire me. I read about ten pages or so of six or seven books and I don’t know if it was that or just the time my brain had to contemplate, but I finally came up with the inspiration I needed. I worked on outlining a bit and though it isn’t completely structured I have a much better idea of everything and a gist of how I want it to go. I figured out more about my main characters, how they connect to each other, what obstacles they need to overcome and their purposes. I also hashed out more of the setting in my mind and what the bad guy might be working on that they would need to stop. I know, that sounds like a lot, and it was which is why I’m not THAT upset by my lack of writing for the novel, I made progress, it just doesn’t show up on the word count. I really hope that tomorrow I can make up for that lost day and get back to my normal routine. We shall see!

NaNoWriMo: Day 6

NaNoWriMo Day 6

Today was the day the USA election took over. I barely even thought about writing as I was watching hour after hour of seemingly endless and repetitious coverage. The winner was decided and I was left with one hour to cram in as much writing as humanly possible. I didn’t get quite as much done as I would have liked, especially not with the day as a whole, but considering that constraint I feel relatively satisfied with the knowledge that I somehow managed to at least hit the official NaNoWriMo daily word count goal of 1,667. They admittedly are probably not the best 1,667+ words that I have written thus far, but at least they are in there and I have to remember that I am allowed to suck.

Tomorrow when I am not going around to the hundreds of Waiting On Wednesday posts and commenting on them I will hopefully be putting in some extra writing hours. I look forward to it as I am now essentially done with my initial piece which will end at ~34,000 words and have moved on to my second piece which is hovering at ~2,000. Oh! I just realized, I also passed another milestone in the path toward 50,000 words which was moving past the 35,000 mark! Hooray! Should be a fun day tomorrow. ^.^

NaNoWriMo: Day 5

NaNoWriMo Day 5

I did not set any goals for Day 5 which I suppose turned out to be a good thing. However, I have decided that my personal goal will be 2,500 words rather than the NaNoWriMo standard of 1,667 per day. I don’t know if it is because the number is just so nice and round or if it is just a benchmark I prefer to get but that’ll be the one I work with. It will also keep me ahead of that NaNoWriMo daily mark which is helpful just in case I have days where I can’t write, perish the thought.

I only wrote in my initial piece for today. I just had a few things I had come up with for it that I wanted/needed to get out and so for the limited amount of time I did write that is what I chose to focus on. I actually had to do some research for the bit I did today which was interesting as well as time consuming. I enjoyed adding some scientific studies into my main piece because it was a passion for me for so long, especially in high school, and I had missed reading articles on various new understandings. I am very, very close to finishing the first piece though so I’ll be forced to work on the second one, not that I mind terribly. The piece looks like it will end somewhere between 35,000 and 40,000 words, or about 40-42 pages single spaced in Times New Roman 12pt font if you prefer a visual. I’m satisfied with how it went and though it is somewhat unfortunate that the initial piece will almost certainly fall far short of being enough for the 50,000 goal by itself I do not want to stretch it just for that very purpose.

Outside of the daily goal of 2,500 I don’t have any plans writing wise for tomorrow. Tomorrow is election day for those of us in the United States so I will be paying close attention to, and voting in, it for the majority of the day, hopefully it won’t prevent me from getting my daily goal in, I don’t think it will.

NaNoWriMo: Day 4

NaNoWriMo Day 4

You know what they say about the best laid plans? Well that expression really has applied to my writing lately. I had said that my “day off” was Day 3 when I only wrote 3,425 words and that I planned to write a minimum of 5,000 words for Day 4. Try about half that. This time I don’t even have a good book as an excuse, to be truthful I don’t have any excuses. I didn’t really do anything meaningful during all of that time that I could have been writing and yet here I am having barely moved forward. Part of this is because during Day 1 & Day 2 I wrote almost all of the easier part of the novel. The first 25,000 words or so came easily and practically poured out of me like a dam that couldn’t hold back the water any longer. In contrast the last almost 6,000 words have been like pulling teeth. I am at the point in my novel where it is more about reflection and the actual attempt to solve the issues that were brought up, definitely harder then laying out the groundwork of the problems themselves. Also, this novella, I’m calling it that since even 50,000 words is considered a novella not a full fledged novel, is reaching the end. I don’t know that it is going to make it to 50,000, it looks like it will be much closer to about 40,000.

This meant that in order to “win” this NaNoWriMo I would need to do *gasp* a second piece. Well I hadn’t thought even a little bit about doing that before the last day or so which meant I had nothing prepared. One might think I would have a well of ideas, or at least a few pages of them in a notebook or word document somewhere, one would be wrong. I could only come up with the smallest of parts of ideas, nothing that I could turn into even a novella of decent length.

I guess today wasn’t a total loss because I used it to do some contemplating to come up with an idea. I did finally come up with one that I will be running with. It isn’t fully formed by any means, still just a baby idea, but it is workable. This will also keep my creative juices flowing because I will be able to work on two different pieces. I can work on whichever my mind feels like moving forward and hopefully I won’t have to push so hard just to write a couple thousand words like I did today. The second piece is going to be much harder for me because, unlike the first one, it is going to be much more in depth and involve a lot more characters. The first piece really only focuses on the main character and how they perceive the world in relation to them, the second won’t be anything of the sort which is something that freaks me out and excites me at the same time. The second one will also require a lot more world building so hopefully I’m up to the challenge. It will likely drastically lower my speed levels but that’s alright since I’ve built up plenty of cushion. The even more awesome part, or at least I would imagine it would be for anyone reading this, is that unlike the first piece I may actually be willing to share the second one with people! Crazy I know. You’ll have to wait and see. ^.^

NaNoWriMo: Day 3

NaNoWriMo Day 3

I really should have written more. I thought about it throughout the day but I kept finding other things to do and I had started a book that was too good to put down. Luckily I had written about 3,400 words in the early AM of the day before I crashed so it wasn’t a total loss. I read, watched YouTube videos, the usual stuff. Tomorrow I really do plan on focusing and writing at least 5,000 words but hopefully closer to 10,000. How are your NaNoWriMos going so far? Are you still enjoying yourself? Are you ahead, behind, right on par and how do you feel about that? Let me know in the comments, I would love to hear from those who are participating! ^.^

NaNoWriMo: Day 2

NaNoWriMo Day 2

Day 2 was a day of relaxation for me. I had created a gigantic cushion for myself after my insane Day 1 and so I decided to relax a little and let my brain rest as I watched YouTube videos and entered some book giveaways. I did fuel my creative juices with some podcasts that some fellow NaNos had done that talked about what they were planning to write about in a round-table format. They each would have a turn to use about five minutes and tell the group what their novel was going to be about. Afterwards the others would go around one at a time and ask for any clarifications they had and when those were completed they brought up some “what if…” scenarios. Due to how long they spoke they divided the podcast up into four parts and I listened to each one as they spoke about world and character building, how their characters would interact with others, how much research they had to do and whether or not they had “dirtied” up everything and everyone enough for their satisfaction. ^.^ I had a lot of fun and the hours flew by.

I finally settled in and wrote for a little while before my folks came home. I got a few thousand words in which is all I really had planned for the day so I was pretty happy. I participated in a few sprints and even a 1k1hr which is exactly what it sounds like. I highly recommend those, it is quite likely that you will far exceed 1,000 in that time frame and they really get your writing vibes going. My folks came home right as I was finishing up so I left my writing when the hour was up and went on a supper/family time break. It lasted a lot longer than I thought and I was quickly running out of time for the day. I couldn’t go right back to writing for NaNoWriMo because I needed to get my Stacking The Shelves post together and that always takes at least a couple hours. I worked on that and got it done and before I knew it I was starting another event I had planned for today.

I used to play poker a lot when I was doing an internet radio show about it and I still do tournaments a couple times a week. They are free but they do have prizes you can win and I know the people that host and play in them so I have fun. I managed to do really well in this tournament (finishing fourth) but it was completely consuming all of my writing time. During times when I wasn’t in a hand and when we went on our five minute breaks each hour I would try to get in as many words as I could. I was so close to hitting 25,000 and though that fact shocked me I knew I just had to hit it. I pulled it off and I’m at 25,016 now, halfway! ^.^ I can’t wait to focus on my writing tomorrow and hopefully I will get in another 5,000-10,000 since I will be more focused.

How is your NaNoWriMo going so far? Are you having fun? Have you been participating in any word wars, sprints, 1k1hrs or hangouts and if not why don’t you? I find them extremely fun and helpful to motivate me. Let me know in the comments if you’d like! Good luck! 🙂

NaNoWriMo: Day 1

NaNoWriMo Day 1

Wow, that was an amazing first day! Whether I was participating in sprints on twitter or word wars in hangouts on Google with fellow NaNos it was a day absolutely full of writing. For those who don’t remember the daily goal for NaNoWriMo is 1,667 words. Through sheer insanity and disregard for all else but writing I wrote 17,546 words. 17,546! That’s over 1/3 of the whole goal! O.O I honestly have no clue how I churned out so many but it was so much fun doing so. The words were flying out and though there will be an insane amount of editing that needs to be done before I’d ever let anyone else even glimpse at it I think I actually wrote rather well.

I’m excited for day two! I’m not sure how much writing I will do today though it definitely will not be on par with day one, that was just crazy excitement and not doing ANYTHING besides writing for almost the entire day. I will try to get in a few thousand words though so we shall see. ^.^ Let me know if you are participating and if so how you are doing so far!

Also, if you follow my blog regularly then you know that I was supposed to have a review up yesterday. I’m sorry! NaNoWriMo madness overtook me! During this month my posts may be a bit more erratic outside of the daily NaNo updates which I promise I will do. I will still participate in my usual memes (Stacking the Shelves, Sunday Post and Waiting on Wednesday) but the reviews will mostly be whenever I can get to them. So some days you will just have the NaNo update and others you might have that, a meme AND a review! It’ll be fun I swear. ^.^ Thank you so much for your patience while I try this novel writing thing out. I really do appreciate it as well as all the support I have received thus far, it means so much. 🙂

NaNoWriMo!

NaNoWriMo

This is my first time participating in the awesomeness that is National Novel Writing Month or NaNoWriMo and I’m really excited for it! As the picture above says the goal of NaNoWriMo, outside of just writing as much as you can to create a novel, is to write 50,000+ words in the 30 days in the month of November. You don’t have to write that much but if you do hit 50,000 in the 30 days then you “win”. That averages out to at least 1,667 words per day which for some sounds like a daunting task. Initially I was worried about trying to complete this monumental task but I did a little test writing just to see how I’d do and I don’t think I’ll have too big of an issue hitting that 50,000 mark sometime this month. If any of you would like to sign up just click the link above, it is very easy, don’t worry that it has already started, it’s early!

I will be doing a post each day about how my progress is going though some will likely be relatively short and just giving you a general gist of my morale and word count. For me the most fun is interacting with all of the other people that are participating on the NaNoWriMo site, blogs and twitter especially. Don’t get me wrong, I can’t wait to test my capability to write something of this length, but it is that time with all of the other amazing people that I cherish. If you want to add me as a “buddy” on the site you can search for me under frodosco.

I will say that this particular thing that I am writing is a bit on the personal side so I won’t be sharing excerpts or anything of that nature. The only way that I would share anything from a novel is if I start a second one if I finish early which isn’t likely though I have considered the possibility. I encourage you to sign up if you haven’t and if you have make sure to have fun! There are so many amazing activities to partake in, word wars and word sprints to test yourself, and depending on your area ways to hang out with your fellow NaNos. ^.^ For those who don’t know, I am in the Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA area of the world so if I do any events that is where they will be, but there are ones all over the place so check to see what is going on in your area!

Thank you for listening to my babble, I can’t wait to get started! I’ve got snacks ready, caffeine for fuel and a passion to get this particular novel out of my system and onto paper, or at least a microsoft word document. To all that have signed up, good luck! 🙂
