Day 65: Fading Light: An Anthology of the Monstrous: Companion

Day 65

Summary From Amazon

The light has failed: the era of man is at its end.

Born of darkness, the creatures of myth, legend, and nightmare have long called the shadows home. Now, with the cruel touch of the sun fading into memory, they’ve returned to claim their rightful place amidst humanity: as its masters.

The Fading Light Companion contains 5 bonus stories from CM Saunders, Regan Campbell, Jonathan Pine, Peter Welmerink, & Alex Marshall.

It’s time for another edition of Frodo’s Hobbit Sized Reviews! This is where I write a review in the time I have before I go to work or before I go to bed. Short and sweet just like 2nd breakfast!

This companion to the full anthology of the same name features five extra stories, ones that couldn’t be included in the full length novel but were exceptional enough to get Marquitz to create this novella. While the premise behind the companion was good, there are always new ways to show the monsters around us or among us, this companion seems to focus on the more literal of the monstrous. While the first story, Torrential by Regan Campbell, was solid, the rest couldn’t really hold my interest. Roadkill by CM Saunders in particular seemed entirely too invested in creating character depth (even though they never actually came to life as memorable ones, at least to me) and let the “monstrous” play as more of a joke than anything else. I would be willing to give the full length anthology a chance because I think the intent behind it and the direction Marquitz wants to go could work, but this companion didn’t do it for me. Good effort on Campbell’s part as the exception among the five.

Just too much dialogue and not enough oomph for my taste. Thanks as always for reading, come back again tomorrow for Day 66! ^.^

I will likely be using this post to update my progress as I go along but we shall see. Here is my reading list, I plan to read ALL of these during Fraterfest…somehow!

Reading List

Attic Clowns: Volumes One & Two < Read and mini-review is up!

Attic Clowns: Volume Four < Read

Here Be Monsters < Read

Aberrations: Horror Stories < Read

Zombified < Read

Blood Singers

The Wicked

I was fortunate enough to win eBook copies of Rhiannon Frater’s Pretty When She Dies & Pretty When She Kills right before Fraterfest started. However, though I would like to put them on this list I have not actually been sent them yet. What I will say is if I do receive them before Fraterfest ends I will insert them either into the list if I have time leftover, or in place of either Blood Singers or The Wicked. That’s all from me for now but I will post updates as I go! Happy reading! ^.^

*Update* Early this morning guess what popped into my inbox? That’s right! I received my eBooks of Pretty When She Dies & Pretty When She Kills! I will be replacing Blood Singers and The Wicked with these two titles and IF I have time I will still read Blood Singers and The Wicked but they are now lower priority. 🙂

Fraterfest Read-A-Thon is a fun way for bloggers to attack their TBR piles, specifically the books that contain “things that go bump in the night” (think vampires, zombies, werewolves, shapeshifters, ghosts, etc.) and is hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

If you want to participate you can click on the link above to learn more, if you’d rather not or you don’t have a blog you can participate on twitter by using the hashtag #FraterFest! There are going to be prizes over on Kimba’s blog for read-a-thon participants. In order to qualify as one you must post your goals and results and participate in a minimum of one challenge. You don’t have to have a blog for this, you can participate via Facebook , google+, goodreads, or a personal blog. The more detailed and up-to-date schedule will be released over on Kimba’s blog on the 5th but feel free to join up before then!

As for what I am going to do it will depend on what Kimba posts of course but I do plan on reading a few select books that fit rather well in this genre. I mentioned on my Sunday Post that I would be doing a review of Attic Clowns:Volume Two (I may add Volume One as I just got that for free today) and those fit in perfectly! I have a few more that I am considering which include the very popular freebie Sweet Venom, Here Be Monsters, Aberrations: Horror Stories, Zombified, Blood Singers, The Wicked and/or Monsters (The Bloodless). By the way Attic Clowns Volume One & Two are both free as are Sweet Venom, Here Be Monsters (today only!), Aberrations (today only!), and Zombified. Blood Singers is a dollar and The Wicked & Monsters (The Bloodless) are the standard 3$ if you wanted to purchase any of them!

I hope you will join me in Fraterfest and we can dive into some horror wonderment together! Until next time, thanks for reading, and leave comments! I read every one even if I don’t respond often and I do appreciate them!
